J is for Joy

In the learning environment, J is for Joy:

the joy of lifelong learning;
the joy of pursuing courses or degree programs of interest;
and yes - the joy of completing a course on schedule and taking a break before the next course begins!

It may sound strange to say J is for the joy of student loans - yet without them, I wouldn't have been able to accomplish what I have so far, nor continue to pursue my doctoral studies and remain on the path toward my goal of becoming Dr. K'Lee, Educational Consultant!

In our home, J is also for the joy of a supportive husband, who encourages me to pursue my dreams ...

and J is for the joy of little furry companions who keep me company during the day - and save my place at my desk or anywhere else when I walk away for a few moments!

Of course, I also have wonderful daughter named Joy - but she prefers to go by her full first name of Joylynne these days!

"I" is for Instructional Design-Instructional Technology

I started an "ABC" blog challenge last year, and never completed it. Since I stopped with "H is for Home School," I would like to pick up with "I" since it works well for the purposes of this post.

So... I is for Instructional Design or Instructional Technology. As I mentioned in my previous post of belated new year greetings, my concentration for both my M.Ed. degree and my current Ed.D. degree program was/is instructional design/technology or educational technology.

While instructional technology and educational technology tend to be used interchangeably, they have subtle differences. Educational technology addresses educational needs and problems with specific processes and tools, including computers and other electronic technologies. Instructional technology is actually a subset of educational technology, specifically dealing with teaching and learning applications.

Instructional design, though related, focuses on creating instructional materials that fit the needs of learners. It usually follows what is known as the ADDIE model, which stands for the following:
Analyze learner characteristics and identify goals;
Design learning objectives;
Develop instructional or training materials;
Implement (distribute/deliver) instructional materials ; and
Evaluate effectiveness of materials toward achieving learning goals.

*An interesting note: Part of one of my last assignments for my current course, "Technology and the Curriculum," was to create a blog for educational purposes. Since I already had this one, my mentor allowed me to use it rather than starting over. It would be great if ALL assignments were as much fun as this!

Belated Happy New Year 2012-Time to Pursue Education

Since it's still January, I wanted to take the opportunity to extend belated Happy New Year greetings to all my blog readers.

I don't know about you, but 2011 was an eventful year, and not all in good ways. One of the best events of 2011 was my youngest daughter's marriage in June, which means I now have a wonderful son-in-law. My middle daughter also became engaged, so that's another wonderful memory for 2011.

Toward the end of 2011, I also acquired a wonderful new freelance opportunity as an instructional designer with an established company that provides training courses and simulations for a variety of clients. This is the type of work I had been waiting for since the last short term job in 2008, after I earned my M.Ed. in instructional technology.

The worst event of 2011 was that my Mom passed away in July, after a brief battle with lung cancer. She had been a breast cancer survivor, but apparently she was not cancer-free, as tests revealed other spots of cancer throughout her body, in addition to the mass in her lung.

The remainder of 2011 proved to be stressful, due to grieving and dealing with estate matters. Since both parents are now gone, my siblings and I have estate matters to manage, as it was in my parents' will to sell the house we all grew up in and divide the profit among the four of us as our inheritance.

Now, I'm happy to face a new year of opportunities. Looking ahead into 2012, I'm eager to continue to gain experience as an instructional designer. It's great to have a good job I can do from home!

I also am continuing with my Ed.D. program, actually winding down toward the dissertation phase. I am wrapping up a course now, and then have three elective courses remaining before the research courses begin prior to working on my dissertation.

New Month - New Opportunities to Succeed!

[I apologize ahead of time to those of you who read more than one of my blogs, as I am posting this in each one as an update!]

Hello - yes, it's really me!

After getting off to such a good start with blogging in 2011 - I have had three unusual months in a row and am NOW trying to get back into it, in this new month of August.

Brief summary with the major events of each month:

*May: I had a GREAT private writing client who paid me $100+ per article, PLUS bonuses! He kept me busy most of the month; one week, I had my first ever $1000 week - and ended up making over $2400 for the month.

*June: Good news and bad news!

The Good News:

My youngest daughter got married and I acquired a wonderful son-in-law!

My middle daughter also got engaged, and my oldest daughter was already engaged - so two more weddings coming up in the next two years.

Also, I got rehired to work as an online writing tutor for the Online Writing Lab (OWL) at Smarthinking.

The Bad News:

My Mom, who had been in failing health, fell a couple times at home, and while in the hospital for x-rays, tests revealed a mass in her lung.

*July: My Mom passed away.

It has taken awhile to get back to even feeling like writing or doing any other kind of freelance work. Mom had been sick for quite awhile, and we thought she had beat breast cancer a couple years ago...

She was under hospice care and surrounded by family members during her final hours at home. Her final words and fervent prayer were that God would take her quickly, so she could finally see her Lord and her Ben (my Dad) again.

We're glad she's no longer suffering and we're rejoicing that she has rejoined Dad in heaven - we lost him nearly nine years ago, to lymphoma.

H is for HOME School!!

In addition to being a proponent of eLearning - I'm also a fan of home schooling. I home schooled my four kids for 11 years; it was challenging, yet rewarding. This was back between the mid 1980s to mid 1990s. At that time, we didn't have as many options for online home school curriculum or enrollment that are available to home schooling families now.

Home schooling may not be appropriate for everyone, but it is a viable option for a growing number of families, for various reasons. I wrote these articles using titles offered at Demand Media Studios - the first for LiveSTRONG, and the second two for eHow.

G is for Graduate Degrees

April has not been kind to me for my blogging efforts - but I'm going to continue my "A to Z" blog posts, even though the official A to Z Blog Challenge is over today.

SO ... G is for Graduate Degrees. I'm referring to American graduate school degrees, since I have no experience outside of the USA.

Graduate degrees include master's and doctorate degrees, while associate and bachelor's degrees are undergraduate degrees.

If you want to pursue a master's degree, you need to have a bachelor's degree first, as the graduate school will need to evaluate your transcript to determine credit transfer and eligibility for the program. You can find master's degree programs in a variety of fields, in either academic or professional areas. Traditional master's degrees typically require two to three years to complete; online programs can take under two years, depending on the area of study.

If you want to enter a doctorate program, you need to have a master's degree first. Like master's degrees, doctoral degrees are available in many fields, also in either academic or professional areas. Traditional doctoral degrees can take three to six years or more to complete, depending on the area of study. Online degrees take slightly less time. Some doctoral students may complete everything but the dissertation and hold the designation ABD - All But Dissertation - until they complete and defend their dissertations.

The Doctor of Education, designated as Ed.D., is a professional degree focused on applying acquired knowledge and skills. The Doctor of Philosophy, designated with the familiar Ph.D., is an academic degree focused on contributing new knowledge in a specific area of study through research.

F is for FAFSA

F is for FAFSA ... if you are a student, or the parent of a student, you know what this is - if not, or if you need more information, read on!

FAFSA = Free Application for Federal Student Aid.

Unless you are wealthy enough to finance your own, or another person's education, or are fortunate enough to have grants and/or scholarships to fully cover the cost of college education, student loans are a necessity these days to make the dream of earning a college degree a reality.

The FAFSA is lengthy and thorough, but you can fill it out online and save it there for future use. For instance, each year, you can just renew the FAFSA, only updating relevant information for the current year. The purpose of the FAFSA is to ensure all eligible students receive the funds they need to attend college. Some of the benefits of federal student loans include low fixed interest rates, excellent repayment terms (typically not starting until six months after graduation or after the student no longer maintains at least half-time student status), and NO credit check.

Stafford federal student loans are available as either:
*Subsidized--demonstrated financial need; government pays interest on loan until six months after student is no longer enrolled at least half-time in school;
OR
*Unsubsidized--regardless of financial need; student is responsible for accrued interest, which he or she may pay while in school, or have it applied to the loan balance.

Other federal loans include student PLUS loans and consolidation loans.

Here is a list of tips from the FAFSA site of what you need to do to apply for a federal student loan:

Gather the following information: previous year's tax return and other income information; social security number/s (yours and parents' numbers, if you are under 18 and a dependent); driver's license number (if you have one); alien registration number if you are not a US citizen.
Apply as soon as possible after January 1st each year and be mindful of your school's financial aid application deadlines.
Review your FAFSA for accuracy after receiving your Student Aid Report (SAR).

E is for eLearning

Big surprise - NOT! E is for eLearning - naturally!

So what is eLearning, exactly?

eLearning, electronic learning - online, virtual, computer-based learning - is an alternative form of learning, the kind that doesn't take place in a traditional classroom setting. eLearning makes it possible for busy adult learners to take one course, or an entire degree program, without ever having to travel to and from a campus, or sit in a classroom for hours per day, two or three (or more) days a week.

As my tag line says, Learning is a lifelong experience. eLearning makes it more convenient. Instead of trying to fit your life around classes and commuting, you can fit your studies into your life, when they are convenient for you.

For instance, whether you are an early bird, or a night owl - some of the beauties of eLearning are its convenience, flexibility, and accessibility. While every online course or program has assignment or exam due dates or deadlines - or occasionally, scheduled synchronous lectures or interactive discussion sessions - most of the time, it's up to you when to study, access your online materials, or visit the virtual library. As long as you post your discussion assignments and upload regular assignments or projects by/before due dates, eLearning provides a great deal of flexibility and is more conducive toward finally completing a course or earning a degree, than is traditional learning, in many cases.

eLearning today also provides multiple opportunities and choices, from individual courses in nearly any subject, to certificate programs, to degree programs from associate through doctorate levels. It's important to note, however, that depending on the nature of the program and the policy of a particular school, you may need to complete some hands-on training at an approved facility (usually called a clinical or practicum) or attend residency sessions at the school (often for graduate-level programs).

It's also important to keep in mind that eLearning requires self-discipline and time management, along with at least an adequate level of computer and internet "savvy" so you can access your course and navigate around the learning management system at the respective school's site.

Overall, however, eLearning is one of the best ways to acquire the education you want, on a schedule that works for you. Yes, I speak from experience, since I earned my M.Ed. degree through eLearning - and was fortunate to find a fully online Ed.D. program, as well. I highly recommend eLearning!

D is for Doctorate Degree

Picking up where I left off, as other priorities knocked me off the "blog" wagon for a week ... now I have to catch up!

Continuing with the A to Z Blog Challenge, we have D is for Doctorate degree!

Yes, this is the highest degree in the USA for students to earn. According to the 2009 US Census Bureau figures, less than 8 percent of Americans had earned master's degrees, and less than 3 percent had earned doctorate degrees.

I had kept the idea of earning a doctorate degree in the back of my mind as a possible goal to attain some day. Other than the cost (adding to already large student loans!) and the commitment required to be a doctoral student, my other concern was the residency stipulation for the majority of doctoral programs.

Then, of course, I had the task of choosing a path to pursue. Initially, I thought I would go for a master's degree in communication disorders, so I could be a speech-language pathologist (SLP). I had enjoyed my brief time as a speech therapist (SLP Assistant) and would really enjoy getting back into that field. However, after researching programs and realizing all of them required on-campus classes and residencies, and none within easy driving distance, I became discouraged with that plan. (That, and factoring in my age by the time I would have that degree to begin practicing as an SLP!)

So, since I already had my Master of Education degree in Instructional Technology, and have enjoyed the freelance work I have been able to do in that field, that seemed the more logical choice. I began researching for a doctoral program in education, with concentrations in instructional or educational technology, and/or e-learning, hoping to find one with no residency requirement.

The next part of the decision was to pursue either the Ph.D. (Doctor of Philosophy) or Ed.D. (Doctor of Education) path. I wasn't sure about the difference between the two. According to a 2001 Carnegie Foundation study, both doctoral programs are equally rigorous academically, requiring research work and dissertations prior to awarding the degrees, and both are recognized by the National Science Foundation as equivalent terminal (highest academic) degrees. The Ph.D. program is typically research-based on a wide variety of disciplines, while the Ed.D. program is discipline-based on education.

Differences also arise in the specific career path the doctoral recipient follows. Someone with a Ph.D. degree may continue to do research and/or seek upper administrative positions or serve as a professor in various disciplines, while the person with an Ed.D. degree is typically more focused on the field of education, and often seeks a strictly academic career (administrative, clinical, or research).

Image via WikipediaWELL ... I discovered Northcentral University (NCU), based in Arizona, offered 100 percent online doctoral programs, with no residency requirements. NCU considers its Ed.D. program to be a professional degree, preparing the graduate for a career within the field of education. The Ph.D. degree is research-based, preparing the graduate to do "significant research that will make an original contribution to the body of knowledge in your field."

Another difference between NCU's Ph.D. and Ed.D. programs is you must take statistics and advanced statistical methods (I nearly flunked that the first time around in college - just really NOT a "math person") for the Ph.D. programs. I really wasn't willing to risk my entire doctoral journey because of statistics courses ...

SO ... I'm several courses into my Ed.D. doctoral program at NCU, with a tentative graduation date of 2014. My career goal is to provide online instructional facilitation and curriculum development services. While a few such opportunities have been available with my M.Ed. degree, I have seen many more career openings listed that require either an Ed.D. or Ph.D. degree. Hence, the reason for my doctoral journey toward my Ed.D. degree, in the dual concentration of Educational Technology and E-Learning!

C is for College

As we continue with the A to Z Blog Challenge, it's only natural to go with C is for college!

What has your college experience been like - if you have attended already - if not, do you have plans to go to college? As I state in my blog's tagline, "Learning is a lifelong experience. eLearning makes it more convenient."

Come along on my college journey, which still isn't complete!

I was one of those who went directly to college the fall after graduating from high school. Back then (1970s), that was the "normal" course of action. The majority of my fellow learners were also in their late teens and early twenties. I remember being alarmed over having to spend $200 or so on books for an entire semester...how times have changed, as you can now spend that much on ONE book, as I mentioned in my previous post about books. I attended Nyack College in New York and graduated in 1980 with a B.A. in psychology.

Fast forward to the 1980s and 1990s, when I married and raised a family. During those decades, I began to hear more about distance education - primarily through correspondence schools like Ashworth College and Penn Foster College (both of which have gone through name changes since back then and I honestly can't tell you what those names used to be!) I did enroll in, and complete, a writing course through the Institute of Children's Literature. I enjoyed it, but it seemed to take forever, waiting for the mail!

I looked into Ashworth and Penn Foster in the 1990s, and at that point, they were beginning to offer online options. In the late 1990s into 2002 or so, I enrolled in a few programs at both places, but got promptly sidetracked from completing any during some significant family and personal upheavals.

As I entered the "empty nest" syndrome, moved, and remarried, my new husband encouraged me to go back to school, since I delayed doing so for over 20 years. For awhile, I did a combination of online and on-campus classes through a state university and community college. I did complete an associate degree in education, under a speech therapy concentration, at KVCC in Maine. I definitely preferred online courses, as opposed to driving an hour ONE way to attend classes during my last semester!

Immediately after that, I enrolled in an M.Ed. program - fully online - through AIU. Much to my amazement, I graduated with a 4.0 GPA in 2007, with my M.Ed. degree in Instructional Technology. Then, in 2009, that perpetual "lifelong learning" urge struck again, and after researching, I discovered Northcentral University offered doctorate programs - FULLY ONLINE - with no residency requirements!

That is where I am now in my college journey - several courses into my Ed.D. program, in a dual concentration of Educational Technology and E-Learning. Oh, and trying to get back into my several programs through Ashworth and Penn Foster, as well!

B is for Books

Among the primary necessities for any elearning or distance education course, naturally, are the books. Whether these are regular textbooks, ebooks, or other digitally formatted versions of study materials - in any case, B is for Books (my next entry for the A to Z Blog Challenge).

Have you SEEN the price of books lately?? Talk about sticker shock! I remember WAY back, when I was in college for the first time - between 1976 to 1980 - I was shocked over a semester's worth of books costing $200. Now ONE book can cost that much! The higher cost of higher education certainly includes the higher cost of books!

I've discovered there are less expensive alternatives to buying new hard-cover textbooks, however, including downloading ebooks or other digitally formatted versions, buying used books, and renting books.

A is for Always Learning

I decided to join a new blog challenge - this time the "A to Z April Blogging Challenge." The task for this challenge is to write one blog post each day, Monday through Saturday, for the month of April - for a total of 26 posts. Ah HA - yes, that's it - one post for each letter of the alphabet.

The challenging part of the challenge is that the topic of each post has to match that day's letter of the alphabet - so today, of course, on April 1st, we start with the letter "A." So since this is an educational blog, it's only natural to choose "A" is for "Always Learning."

I don't think we ever stop learning - if we do, we might start losing brain cells! In fact, another "A" word - Alzheimer's - impairs brain cells and cognitive functioning. One of the strategies to reduce the risk of developing Alzheimer's is to keep your mind active - another "A" word!

What better way to do that than study a subject, out of interest or necessity, and then continue to apply what you learn. Whether you take a single course, or work toward a degree, learning is a lifelong experience. eLearning - taking courses online - simply makes it easier and more convenient, and keeps those brain cells active as they acquire the new knowledge necessary to keep up with this technological age.

After a long hiatus from posting in this blog - over a year - I have decided to return and be a more faithful blogger, especially on this topic of elearning. My motivation is due in part to two different blog challenges I have been participating in this year, since January 1, 2011.

The first one was the Ultimate Blog Challenge (which is starting up again right now, April 1st - no joke!), and right now, the 31 Days Blog Challenge, based on the book by Darren Rowse (of ProBlogger fame) entitled 31 Days to Build a Better Blog. For those two challenges, I have been developing my Office Help 4 Hire blog.

Now, in the month of April, I am "springing" into the second Ultimate Blog Challenge to develop my Words of Encouragement blog, AND signing onto the A to Z April Blogging Challenge to get this blog up and running on a consistent basis!

Now if only spring would be this motivated to get going, instead of allowing winter to keep its firm grasp on New England!

Still Time to Order Flowers

Are you a chronic last-minute gift buyer? Are you in a panic because it's Valentine's Day Eve and you haven't ordered flowers yet for your special someone? Here's a "lesson of life"...try planning ahead next time!

Don't despair, though - you will have to pay extra, but you can still order some beautiful roses or another bouquet of your choice in time for Valentine's Day.

Flowers seem to hold some magical fascination - I'm not sure if it's the wonderful fragrance, the gorgeous colors, the incredible assortment of flowers, or just the fact that God created something so delicate, yet beautiful, for us to enjoy. Whatever it is, everyone seems to enjoy receiving flowers any time - but especially for meaningful occasions like Valentine's Day!

Beware the PAPER MILLS

I'm sure you have seen them - ads offering the "opportunity" for students to PURCHASE papers (essays, research papers, even dissertations!!) crafted by professional writers.

I have looked into some of these companies (and have been contacted by still others) - thinking that they might be offering writing/editing jobs to help students with editing, proofreading, and/or formatting papers ALREADY WRITTEN BY THE STUDENTS who just need help with producing polished copies, in the proper format (APA, MLA, etc.).

BUT ... much to my consternation, they are truly just "paper mills" for lazy students (even doctoral candidates!) who don't want to write their own MANDATORY essays, research papers, and even dissertations!

Not only is this unethical - promoting academic dishonesty (it's called CHEATING) - it mocks and corrupts the entire system of scholarly integrity - AND can get students expelled from school, as it is expressly stated (in every set of guidelines that I have ever seen) that papers must be the students' OWN work!

As a lifelong learner, master's degree holder, and prospective doctoral candidate (and one who has always written my OWN papers) - this subject REALLY bothers me, obviously!

I addressed this whole issue with more than one of these "paper mills" - and they even admitted that what they do is "less than honest," but that they try to fly "under the radar" by using the lame rationalization/excuse that they only sell "sample papers" for students to use for "templates" for their OWN papers and that it's not the company's "fault" if students misconstrue the intention and use the papers as their own ... yeah right - that's why students place ORDERS for the exact content they need!

BACK to SCHOOL

It's that time - kids and teens all over the country are returning to school - whether joyfully or reluctantly!

How about all you adults? Have you considered going after that degree you never had a chance to pursue in years past? How about going for another degree, if you have already earned one? In the present economy, it will literally "pay" you to get ahead and improve your opportunities for career advancement or heading down an entirely different career path.

I am one of those who originally went to college the FIRST time, WAY back between 1976-1980, straight out of high school; I earned my BA degree in Psychology at Nyack College, Nyack, New York. Fast forward to a couple decades later - after raising and homeschooling my own 4 kids (all of whom are now in college themselves!) - I had the wonderful opportunity to return to college myself.

In 2007, I earned an AAS degree in Education, with a concentration in Speech-Language Pathology Assisting, with allowed me to become a speech therapist. In 2008, I finally earned my Master's of Education degree in Instructional Technology.

Yes, I really AM a lifelong learner, hence the title and purpose of this blog - to encourage other adults to do likewise - whether it's to pick up where you left off, earn your very first degree or additional degrees, or simply take courses in areas of interest.

I am presently enrolled in about a dozen distance learning courses, between Ashworth College and Penn Foster . Some of the attractive features of these two colleges are that you can work at your own pace, the prices are very reasonable ( you can make low monthly payments), and you can study anywhere and any time that is convenient for you - no classes to attend at set hours!

I basically arranged my own 'custom curriculum' to cover my current three main areas of interest: eBusiness, computers, and graphic design.

So how about YOU? Whether you want to check out the colleges I mentioned or do some research into other colleges which cater to adult learners - it's time! As a lifelong learner at the beginning of my 'golden' years, I decided I needed to start a blog specifically focused on learning - especially online or "e-learning" - as I am a major proponent of ongoing - and online - education.

Take it from someone who just earned her Master's in Education/Instructional Technology degree in 2008 at the age of 50 - the proliferation of online education (such as AIU-American Intercontinental University - Online, where I earned my degree) makes it even more likely that adult learners can return to school and earn long delayed degrees ... or go to college for the first time, like my husband, who just started his online college adventure this week at University of Phoenix.

Learning is a passion of mine ... and I hope to share thoughts and information through this blog which may be inspirational and beneficial to others.
