B is for Books

Among the primary necessities for any elearning or distance education course, naturally, are the books. Whether these are regular textbooks, ebooks, or other  digitally formatted versions of study  materials - in any case, B is for Books (my next entry for the A to Z Blog Challenge).

Have you SEEN the price of books lately?? Talk about sticker shock! I remember WAY back, when I was in college for the first time - between 1976 to 1980 - I was shocked over a semester's worth of books costing $200. Now ONE book can cost that much! The higher cost of higher education certainly includes the higher cost of books!

I've discovered there are less expensive alternatives to buying new hard-cover textbooks, however, including downloading ebooks or other digitally formatted versions, buying used books, and renting books.

These are book suppliers I've used over the past few years for my different courses, or heard about from others; if you're a parent with college students, or a student yourself, hopefully one or more of these will be helpful for you:

*Amazon New & Used Textbooks
*Bookrenter Cheap College Textbook Rentals
*Chegg Textbook Rentals
*Textbooks.com - Buy, Rent, or Download

Happy shopping for your books!

  1. Wow! Was surprised to see this post pop up, just as I had commented on the last one! =) Thanks for these excellent links on getting access to cheaper books. I had completely forgotten about online sources! Where I am in Peru, the municipal library is the only public library around and it costs money to get in! =P Who knew that libraries weren't always free.

Thankfully, I'm starting classes at the local university and was absolutely ecstatic to get my very own free library card this past Friday! Woopee! =)

  2. Another great place to get books and All types of information is your college or school library! That's what they are there for, and will be happy to help you. I work at a distance library so we courier(overnight ship) books to our students across the country even overseas. Ebooks are gaining in popularity, especially with institutions like ours, as they make a lot of sense.
